Imagine having the power to say ‘No’ to sin and living a victorious Christian life. It’s possible, and we have the tools to make it happen.

Our Christian walk needs to become more practical. When our old nature died with Jesus, we gained the power to say ‘No’ to sin (Romans 6:6 LB). This revelation can be used as a tool for overcoming sin in our daily walk, but more on that another time…

Let’s explore another practical tool God provides for our spiritual journey: Prayer.

The Importance of Communication

In today’s world, communication is vital:

  • We learn communication from our parents and others, including speech and body language. We often take these lessons for granted.
  • Successful teams, businesses, marriages, and other relationships, thrive on good communication.
  • Better communication leads to stronger relationships and unity, whether through speech or body language.
  • We use communication to obtain information by asking questions.
  • Children ask questions to learn.
  • With those we know, we seek to learn more about them and their lives by asking questions.
  • We ask questions to get to know people we don’t know.
  • When we have emotional feelings for someone, we communicate those feelings and get to know them more intimately.

Prayer: A Divine Tool

In our spiritual lives, God gives us prayer as a vital tool. Like Salvation, prayer is a gift from God, along with the faith to believe in those prayers.

Understanding Prayer

Prayer is simply speaking to God. It’s a tool to strengthen our spiritual lives. Praying throughout the day, God speaks to us through His Spirit. To know Him better, we must spend time with Him (in His word and in fellowship). Better communication with God leads to a better understanding of Him and a better ability to hear His voice. Just like in the worldly sense, we should ask God questions and tell Him things. We need the Holy Spirit to pray deeply, bearing in mind, He works with what we have within us.

The Practicality of Praying

  • Prayer is a threat to the evil one, who will try anything to stop us from strengthening our relationship with God.
  • The fear of man can stop us and others from communing with God and hearing Him speak to us. We must ignore negative voices.

Tips for Praying

  • In communal prayer, we can’t hear others speak without opening their mouths, so we too, need to open our mouths to pray effectively.
  • Don’t listen to negative voices while praying – they are not from God!
  • Children learn to talk by talking all day, practicing. Similarly, we should pray all day, practicing.
  • Pray alone or with others. As we practice, the fear of man is overcome.
  • Traditionally, we are taught to ask for things or appeal when in trouble, like a ‘shopping list.’ A deeper way is to pray while listening to God, to hear what He is saying to us.

Different Types of Prayer

  • Worshipping God: Exalting God (Use the book of Psalms during a prayer time).
  • Interceding to God: Asking on behalf of others.
  • Petition Praying: Asking God for things.

In all these types of praying we should remember to:-

  • Pray for God’s Will: This is better because God knows what is needed in every situation.
  • Learn to Wait on God: Let Him speak into our hearts.

Through these insights, we see that prayer is a powerful and practical tool in our spiritual walk. By strengthening our communication with God, we can deepen our relationship with Him and navigate our spiritual journey with greater faith and clarity.

Prayer is a powerful tool in our spiritual journey. Let’s commit to spending time in prayer daily and experience the transformation it brings.
